Even Me? – a culturally responsive HIV awareness campaign

By Karina Reeves

In this episode, we speak with Karina Reeves, Coordinator – Population Health and Community Development at WAAC. Even Me? is a culturally responsive HIV awareness campaign developed by WAAC to improve knowledge, reduce stigma, and promote prevention in Western Australia. The campaign was created through a collaborative process with people from various cultural backgrounds, ensuring their voices, experiences, and insights shaped every stage of development. With recent data showing that an increasing proportion of new HIV cases in WA are among people born overseas, the campaign aims to address these disparities through culturally responsive, community-led action.

The campaign also highlights key learnings about the role of community, culture, and collaboration in Australia’s evolving HIV response. Ultimately, Even Me? lays the groundwork for a more inclusive and effective approach to HIV prevention, to ensure no one is left behind.
